Ashleigh Mattern is the owner-operator of Vireo Productions, a digital creative agency based in Saskatoon, Sask. A writer and editor by training and experience, Ashleigh ran a freelance writing and editing business under her own name for seven years before she and her husband Jordan Mears launched Vireo Productions together in 2015.
Writer & editor
Words are Ashleigh’s passion. She began her career as a journalist and editor in 2007 at the University of Saskatchewan student newspaper the Sheaf. She worked as arts editor, copy editor, and editor-in-chief at the Sheaf, and in summer 2008 held an internship at the StarPhoenix.
Following graduation from the U of S with an English degree in 2011, she expanded her writing skills to include copywriting. She worked for Saskatoon Media Group in the creative department writing commercials for CJWW, Magic, and the Bull; and began offering marketing services to her freelance clients.
In spring 2017, she launched Play Sask Sports & Recreation with her husband and two other co-owners. In fall 2017, she took a position as a part-time casual web writer for CBC Saskatoon, while continuing her work with Vireo Productions and Play Sask.
Entrepreneur & speaker
Before launching Vireo and Play Sask, Ashleigh ran a freelance writing and editing business for seven years that served more than 40 clients (many of whom Vireo Productions still serves).
She loves to share her experience as a writer and entrepreneur through speaking engagements. She’s been invited to conduct writing workshops and speak about her work to elementary and postsecondary students, and has spoken at Women Entrepreneurs of Saskatchewan and at the Saskatoon tech and music festival, MoSo.
Ashleigh particularly enjoys speaking about freelance writing, journalism, copywriting, entrepreneurship, small business skills, and web development for business owners and beginners.
